In February 2003 I stayed at French Lick Springs Hotel with a group of paranormal investigators I'd joined. This was during the winter ''off season,'' and the staff at the time was pretty cool about letting us investigate the place and use our equipment because there weren't a lot of guests that would be bothered by it.
We had a few experiences, but two events or circumstances still stand out in my mind. One concerns the elevators especially the main one near the lobby. They often seem to act of their own volition. I saw the elevator open and then close again on at least one occasion. It was empty. I think it's rumored to have to do with the well-known ghost of a bellhop who died there. Anyway I was scouting the hallways taking photographs and getting a sense of the hotel's layout when I passed the lobby elevator. I think I was on the second floor at the time. It was stuck between floors and maintenance staff was helping some guests climb up out into the hallway. Any old elevator can malfunction. It was odd though that this one seemed to be having so much trouble.

Later I headed down to what used to be the Derby a bar on the basement level floor. The Eagles' ''Hotel California'' was playing on the jukebox when I walked in. I relished the irony, but I talked to the bartender, and he informed me that the elevator was still down. In fact it was completely out of commission. The elevator was one thing. Like I said any old elevator was prone to acting up. The other event wasn't as easily explained. We rented what was known as the ''Honeymoon Suite'' on the seventh floor.

The sixth and seventh floors have long been regarded as the most haunted areas of the hotel. The ''Suite'' got its nickname from an old legend about a groom that became enraged with his new wife for some reason and killed her in the room. I believe he allegedly left her body in the bathtub. I don't know that the story has ever been verified. It honestly sounds like an urban legend to me, but that doesn't mean something similar didn't happen to inspire the story.
We set up our equipment in the room. I had a 35mm film camera and an analog tape recorder. I ran pretty old-school in those days. Everyone else had digital cameras and digital recorders. We set up a tri-field EMF meter near the bathroom doorway due to the mention of the bathtub in the old story. The meter can detect sources of EMF radiation, and you can use it to distinguish between natural (living) sources of energy and unexplained energy bursts. It's probably considered old hat now, but at the time I thought the tri-field was pretty hot $h*t. We initiated an EVP (electronic voice phenomena) recording session during which we'd ask questions of any lingering personalities and review our recordings afterward to see if any voices registered that weren't apparent in real time during the session.
Our group's president Mike went through the usual questions, and I forget which question it was (it's in my notes, but I don't have them with me). However, we got a hit on the tri-field. A big one. It let out a high-pitched squeal, and the needle on the milligauss indicator jumped. Something had moved past the meter (and therefore the doorway to the bathroom). Without missing a beat Mike reminded us to take some photographs. Camera flashes burst out like lightning in the direction of the doorway.
