of stairs, another flight of stairs, through the house, and into the living room where my father was watching TV. I don't remember what I said to him, but the next thing I do remember was my father in my room pounding the hell out of this bench.
For the next 20 years he maintained that when he walked into my room that the bench was just being a bench, sitting on the floor doing nothing.
Fast forward 20 years, and I'm married with children

and back in Gary visiting the family. My father asked me if I remembered that night. Like I could have forgotten that night? He told me that when he walked

into the room that summer night in 1977 the bench was pressed against the ceiling. I knew that I hadn't lost my mind.
Moving out of Brunswick was a ''dream come true. '' We went from a neighborhood where it was not unusual to find dead people on the way to school to a neighborhood where you sat in front of your house all night talking to friends or playing ''chase''. Bottom line, my father was not about to let some playful ghost drive us out
