ten people on the ''party line,'' which was all the rave that summer in Gary. I heard the door leading down the staircase open up, and then I heard my father very quietly but very firmly call out to me, ''I know that you're not asleep. Get up here right now. '' I had no idea what he wanted me for, but I was sure that I was in trouble, so I walked into the dark kitchen, and there were my mom and dad in an even darker pantry room looking out of the window.
