I was born and raised in Hammond. One Halloween night I was walking home from my aunt's house on Marble Street. She lived across the street from the old Junior Toy factory that was abandoned for many years. We walked down Sheffield Avenue towards the B&O train tracks to head down Hudson Avenue. I lived on the 4600 block of Towle Avenue.
As we walked down Marble to head north on Sheffield, we noticed there was a train and many cars backed up on Sheffield Avenue as was always the case. We started to cross the street in between the cars and saw a female ghost that was floating across the street from the Junior Toy side to the houses on that other side of Sheffield Avenue. It was so real.

Many saw her, and she floated right over the hood of a car waiting for the train. Many honked their horns. When the ghost made it to the other side of the street, she disappeared. My brother and I ran home and told my mom, and she said we were crazy. She turned on the local AM radio station, and they reported there were multiple reports and said it probably was the ghost frequently seen that died on Halloween. This sighting was in the late 1970s. I never forgot this experience but can't find any history on this event.

We moved into a beautiful house in a historic district of Hammond a few years ago. When this house was built in 1923 Al Capone financed its construction and specified some features: bulletproof walls and floors among others. Capone used this house to collect the dough from those who bought his cases of bootleg hooch as well as from the bordello operators he fronted here in Hammond. He would stop on his way from Burnham to Michigan City or Cedar Lake.
