It's been 34 years since my girlfriend was murdered in Merrillville and I can remember the day as if it were yesterday. Having been born and raised in Gary I never thought that anything so horrible could ever happen in a sleepy little town like Merrillville; but it did. In Gary people getting killed was common place but nothing like this. So imagine how unheard of it was in the 70's for a Merrillville girl to be butchered by some freak of nature. Not even in Gary did such things ever happen. Fast forward 34 years to 2009; I am in Gary visiting family and friends and one night I jump in the car and I drive out to the house in Merrillville where my girlfriend lived where they found her bond gagged and ripped to pieces. The Merrillville neighborhood has changed dramatically since that day so many years ago. I sat in my car hoping not to attract any attention.
Although nearly midnight I can see plenty the blue lights from many television sets through windows. I stare at the house and wonder if the people inside have any idea what occurred there some many years ago. Back then there was no law that demanded that such things be revealed to anyone buying a house. As I sit there I can remember the two of us at the y&w drive in the last night of her life and I can remember word for word the last conversation she and I had the night she was murdered. As I sat in my car I could see someone in her old bedroom changing the channels of there TV.I stare at the very door where some freak walked through and found her alone sleeping in her bed. I wonder if she was wearing her cookie monster pj's when it happened. I lived in Gary for many years after the murder but could never bring myself to go anywhere near that place.

Often I'd drive past iddings school where she and I would meet on summer mornings when we were kids and have even sat inside the pizza place in the struck and van till Plaza where we'd go for those big cheeseburgers. But never until just recently have I never been back to that horrible house. You'd never suspect that it was the scene of one of Merrillville's most brutal murders. OK enough of the sentimental stuff and let me get to the point. Since the night 5 months ago very strange things have begun to happen. The first thing that happened was the very night I parked outside of her old house. I could not cry I could not even bring myself to admit that it was even a true story.

With now friend my age still remaining in Gary I drove to a place called maxims on Broadway for a drink. No one could have possibly known that I was going there because I had never been there before and did not know anything about the place until that very day. However 20 minutes after arriving the bar tender calls out my first and last name and says that I have a call from and then says my girlfriend's first and last name. I was so scared that I did not who I was.
The next night as I sat in my Gary home watching TV thinking about the night before a car pulled up outside the house; no one got out of the car but I could clearly see that the car was a 60's model Chevy the exact year make model and color as the car my girlfriend was driving up until the night she was killed. A few days later the phone rang after 1 am and each time all that was heard was a woman whimpering on the other end. That was 5 months ago and I am back home now in sunny Orlando with my wife and four kids. Nothing has happened out of the normal but I wonder what will happen next time I go home.
