My wife D and I lived in an apartment in a house on 12th & Main in 1987. It was an efficiency type with one bedroom separated by a wide deep stairwell with exit to the back. It was the servants quarters when first built in late 1860s. One winter night I was watching a basketball game while she was putting laundry in the drawers in the bedroom. Between my field of vision and the TV was a director's chair with our cat asleep on it. I heard my wife speaking

but thought she may have been on the phone. As she entered the kitchen/living area she gasped and asked if our cat had been there the whole time. I replied

she had, but D said there was a strange cat in the apartment.
We searched but found nothing, but she was convinced that she had seen it. Even its eyes glowed from the security light mounted on the second floor landing outside she said. We searched all over, even behind the water bed but found nothing. I looked out on the landing for tracks as new snow had covered it but found no prints.
