During the depression my grandmother Dora lived in Paxton. There was an old lady who was on her last leg, and grandma moved her in to take care of her in her final days. The doctor came to check on her and told grandma she didn't have long and just make her happy. She asked the old lady what she would like to eat. She wanted just some chicken soup. They had no chickens and couldn't afford to buy one, so she went to those in town who did have chickens

and asked for one, so she could give the old lady what was likely her final meal. Nobody would help. They said they were not about to waste a chicken

on someone who was going to die anyway. That was the last place she went. She closed the gate and was walking down the road and heard a cluck behind her.
She turned and saw one of the birds had followed her. Somehow it got out of the yard. She shooed it back in, closed the gate, and walked on. Then again the same thing. The third time she looked around she didn't see anyone, so she reached down the chicken's neck. She took it home and made the old lady her
