I didn't want to say anything until I read the stories here. Now I know I'm not going crazy. I lived on 8th Avenue in the middle house facing Spearhead Division Road. I've seen the ''ball of light'' in the basement. I've heard the screams of men on fire. I've smelled the sick sweet smell of burnt human flesh. All in my basement. I thought I was going crazy. I saw a mental health doctor, and I was able to get some help with some reoccurring issues with PTSD, but I never resolved what I felt and what I saw those nights in the basement.
I finished my two years and volunteered for Korea. I moved out, and suddenly I felt better. I got a promotion and have a command now. No, I won't give my name or my dates at Ft Knox. I'll just say it was recent. I feel better now knowing I survived that house of horror when so many others didn't. I want to thank everyone who had the courage to share.

My grandfather a proud black man used to tell us how before the war. He was hired on to build the brick houses on Fort Knox, and he said the war department paid him just the same as a white man because they needed workers. He told me of the time he built the houses on 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Avenues near the ''old Pope's Church'' - his words. He said during the build when they had to dig the basements and foundations he would see ''willow whisps'' especially in the houses between 8th Ave. and 7th Ave. He felt like it was a bad place, and on his birthday and on his and grandma's anniversary when he was allowed to drink he would talk about it with a look of horror on his face. He told me late one night that he believed that he had built a ''gate to hell'' on that street.
He had me promise I wouldn't ever visit there. I never thought much of it, but he believed it, and my daddy believed it. I never have been to Ft Knox, but after reading these other stories I figured I should share my grandfather's story, so it wouldn't be forgotten.
