During the early 1960's we lived in a house on Colvin Avenue in Battle Creek, a two family dwelling. We lived in the downstairs and the upstairs was empty. During the day everything was fine it was only at night that things began to happen.

There were open air heating registers along the ceiling of the downstairs apartment allowing heat to flow up into the upper apartment. At night whenever we passed under these registers dirt and water would fall down on our heads and we felt like we were being watched by someone.

None of us would walk directly under the registers, we walked around them. Once while having our meal at the kitchen table water suddenly poured through the heat register and soaked the table and our food which scared us, for we knew no one lived in the upstairs apartment! At the time there was no wall separating the two apartments. From the front door you walked in the door and stairs led up to the upper apartment, and our living room was in full view of anyone entering.
My parents went up the stairs to see if anyone could have gotten in somehow to pour the water down on us. Of course there was no one upstairs. One night while watching TV the sounds of furniture being dragged across the floor above us and loud booms scared us into calling the police.
They came and searched every inch of the upstairs apartment but found no one. The next night it happened again. This time my grandmother stood under the register in the front room ceiling and shouted out ''stop it! '' the register began to open and close so forcefully that the sound hurt our ears! Dirt and water covered our grandmothers head and shoulders.
