My husband and I were visiting the island in 2005. We were riding our bikes around the perimeter of the island, and it was getting dark. We had no lights on our bikes as we expected to get back to the island house where we were staying before dark. We were near British Landing although we didn't know it at the time and saw an unusual looking gentleman walking toward us. We said hello, and he kind of said ''hrump''. We realized at the same time that he

had no visible ankles or feet. He was wearing old fashioned clothing likely some kind of uniform. We hightailed it out of there but glanced back around,

and he was no longer there. There was no place to go -- some rocks and water (where we would have seen him) to one side and trees and a hill on the other side.
We raced back to town and stopped at Doud's Grocery. Some locals started laughing because they said we looked freaked out, and there were bats just above our heads. We mentioned that we thought we'd seen a ghost, and the locals asked us if it was at British Landing and if it was a soldier.
