We bought an old farm from the 1870s. First night we moved in we walked through every room with sage. The room that felt like someone was watching us caught fire a few hours later. After putting the fire out we sat in the lawn making sure the fire hadn't spread anywhere else. Then we saw a tall dark impish creature run out from the house. We now keep sage growing on all sides of our home.

In 2003 my husband and I were looking to buy a house in Monroe County in MI. We had a limited budget, and I had big dreams. I knew just what I wanted, a big old house with lots of character. Everyone we knew had an idea of where we should look - ''Don't go to the east end; don't go to the west end. Try Dundee; look in Ida, etc. '' After dropping him off at work, and map in hand I started driving around the county looking for an affordable dream home. Not being from around Monroe, it was easy for me to get lost, and I was quite relieved when I came across a small town. What had been a warm fall day seemed to take on a nip as I approached the main street. It was almost as if the town was warning me away. I literally got goose bumps on my arms and that tingling on the back of my neck.
The first thing I noticed was NO PEOPLE anywhere. Now this was about noon on a nice fall day. I swear you could have shot off a cannon, and no one would have noticed. Creeped out, I ventured more into town. Ah a bar, someone could give me directions. I pulled up in front and parked my car. Just then a man who I had not seen a moment earlier tapped on my driver's window. I nearly came out of my skin. I thought about taking off, but I knew the likely hood of this man being a criminal was low. I was in a tiny town in the backwoods of Monroe. Gingerly I rolled down my window. He got right to the point, ''I saw you driving around. It looks like you might be lost. I am sure you didn't end up here on purpose. '' I laughed nervously, ''Ah, no actually I'm out looking for a house to buy; we are moving to Monroe. '' The man stood back and got a real funny look on his face. ''You don't want to buy a house here; you should try Dundee, or even Ida, Maybee's not for you''. I felt my anger rising, ''Why not?'' I asked curious but still very perturbed. ''Just isn't; I can tell. You should leave now. '' After assuring him that I found the small town charming, (ok I stretched it a little because he made me mad) and I was going to look around. He directed me to the library where I could look up listings for homes.
