When I moved to Muskegon 18 years ago, I used to drive by a house on Peck and wish that I could live there. Perfectly and strangely, the house went up for sale at a ridiculous price. The realtor told us that it would need a new roof-- no biggie. She also mentioned that the big front window had been a gathering spot for other families to hold their funerals 100+ years ago. Between the pocket doors and history, I was hooked!
The previous owners came in to move a few objects, including a painting of an older woman. The son said ''mom, we have to tell them. '' The mom said, ''Hush!'' As the son was leaving, his last words to us were ''she always comes back. '' I should have listened.
Between the cackling laughter from the basement, moving objects and disappearing keys, the ultimate decision to leave came on a night that I was home alone. My then-husband and I were divorcing, and he was in his new home. There was an odd thickness in the air that night. My cat was growling deeply and staring at nothing in particular. I couldn't sleep. At one point I was filled with a terrible sense of anxiety and decided to get up. From the master bedroom upstairs there was a long hallway that stretched down to what would have been the back staircase for the hired help. There was also a very small room at the far end of the hallway which always felt odd. Halfway down the hallway, my cat started howling painfully loudly!
At that moment I swore I was going to pass out. The carpeting felt like quicksand, and I had to reach out to support myself on the walls on either side. Keep in mind, I love to be scared. Suddenly, that was shot! There was a very odd bluish glow that literally filled the back staircase. In that split second, my hands still on the walls, a woman, maybe 5'4, glided UP the stairs. She had a high collar on, a bun in wispy grey hair, a full skirt, and most apparently, spectacles. I can remember how strangely the light permeated the glass and color actually appeared from the spectacles on the wall. The wispy shape came up to nearly the back stair, her left hand on the staircase railing.
Thank god for the front grand staircase because I ran like hell in my bathrobe out the front door and drove blindly across town to my ex-husband's house, screaming and crying all the way. I had to return to the house of my dreams and made it for two more months before I realized it was the house of my nightmares.
It has been for sale several times since I 'gave up the ghost' and is for sale presently (January 2016. ) I have thought about stopping in for an open house. Then I remember the son's words, ''she always comes back. '' I still like a good ghost story, but be very careful what you wish for. .
