Around 1965 outside Buchtel heading towards Pittsburg Hollow, I saw a coal miner walking on our side of the road as we were driving along. Grandma was not all that good at driving so I told her to be careful not to run him over. There was very little berm to the road and the grass off from that dropped down to a flat run which had a railroad track running parallel to the road. The man looked exhausted, was covered in coal dust and was carrying his round

tin lunch container. He had held the carbide lamp used to see in the mines just as grandpa's miner's hat was set up. He wore the usual wide leather belt.

He was about 5'7'' and thin as most miners were. Mom and grandma both said they did not see this man but my little brother in the back of the car said he saw him quite clearly. As we passed him I pointed to him saying the car was right next to him. The man's eyes met my own before the car passed him very close.
They kept saying they did not see anyone, and my brother and I kept insisting that he was right there. The car was stopped and everyone
