In July of 1881 a 16 year old girl Kate Shelley risked her life to stop a train from crossing a bridge damaged by flood water. She saved the train and the people on it. Kate lived in the Boone Iowa area until her death in 1912. I came of age in Boone in the 1960's and had heard stories about Kate Shelley and her house. My friends and I wanted to see her house and the ghost train. We had been told that at night you can see the headlight of an oncoming

train and you could hear the sounds of a stream train when you were in her house. Her house was located in the country southwest of Boone and had been

vacant for years. Can you think of a better draw for teenagers? Our unofficial spirit leader was Nancy. She was 17 and had Ouija boards and would hold séances with burning candles holding of hands and moaning (great fun).
One summer day we decided it was time to see Kate Shelley. I think there were six or seven of us that piled into Mary's 59 Chevy and went to the house. It was in the late afternoon when we went. We had to Park on the county
