Just north of Burlington, Iowa on Highway 99 is a marker on the side of the road. Erected in the fond memory of Chief Tama, a friend to the white settlers of SE Iowa. The marker indicates that he is buried ''20 rods'' east of the marker. This would place his unmarked grave approximately 300 feet east of the marker, in the middle of a corn field. Several stories have been told over the years of strange happenings in and around this area. Kaz Justice in 1993 wrote about a strange trip he took to Oakville around Thanksgiving...According to actual testimony recorded by the most Reverend Rolf Swendhall...Justice claims to have encountered a ghostly apparition in the middle of the road that cold November night. He described it as a ''transparent figure, about 6 feet tall, wearing a traditional Indian headdress''.'' Others have claimed to have heard strange sounds and chants emanating from the cornfield in which Chief Tama is buried.

Comment by Rick: I've seen that marker before... Never seen anything ghostly but when I drive up highway 99 around that area at times I get that weird feeling that someone is watching me and I'm not alone.
Comment by Carol: I live in Davenport but have family in West Burlington. On occasion we will take highway 99... I've seen that marker many times. Still waiting to see the ghostly Indian though. :(.
Comment by Randy: About 30 years ago we were coming back through Burlington from a pro wrestling tour in the quad cities. We had just about gotten to Burlington when my tag team partner and driver locked up the brakes. I looked at what he was pointing out and saw it too. It was getting dusk but I'll never forget the image of someone on a horse and then seeing it vanish. Sobering even for Larry The Legend our ring announcer who was always intoxicated and in the van that evening shuttering.
Comment by Kendall: Wow, I thought I was crazy before reading this. Last summer I was heading up to Oakville to see my aunt over the fourth of July. I got this really odd feeling and looked in my rear view mirror and could have sworn I saw a figure standing in the middle of the highway. It happened so fast I thought my mind may have been playing tricks on me, but now that I read this I'm not so sure.
