Velma D. Was a cherished and respected member of the community who taught school for 27 years starting in the 20s in a one-room school house. She had a heart of gold. Her grandson Billy, my second cousin, was a mentally handicapped man with down syndrome who was all but abandoned by his mother. Velma took him in like a son, and with my grandfather's help raised Billy into a kind and humorous man who lived to be 50, 40 years longer than doctors gave him at birth. Sadly Billy preceded her in death by roughly 2 years. My grandma was 90 years old when she buried her grandson, and it brings tears
