We (my wife and our three children) recently started camping at a very primitive spot in Washington County, IA called Sockum Ridge. We were so fed up with overcrowded and over priced campgrounds, so we called the Washington County Conservation Board inquiring about the primitive camping areas.
They gave us a few good options, but we noticed they passed over the Sockum Ridge area. When I asked why they hadn't included that area, they said it was a

''camp at your own risk'' type place. They went on to say it had been a hot spot for drug users and under aged drinking in the past, but that has pretty

much stopped. I asked ''if all that activity has stopped, why not mention it for camping?'' They hesitantly told us of the strange reports that have come from other primitive campers and hikers about how they always had a feeling of being watched and others seeing ghostly looking figures throughout the deeply wooded area.
