What happened to the ghostly New Year's Day car crash submission? Did it get lost in the virtual ether? I'll keep checking (the annual anniversary is coming up!).

Sorting through a pile of papers the other day, I found a Pioneer Press (October. 31st, 2004) front page article clipping about one of Stillwater's lesser known haunted sites, the Seymour House on North 3rd Street. George Seymour, a carpenter by trade, built this triplex in 1880 on or near the site of the vacated pioneer/settler's cemetery known as McKusick's burial ground. Seymour, also a mayor of the city and sheriff of the county, made his fortune with his partner U. S. Senator Dwight Sabin not in the lumber trade but in manufacturing. They did this with cheap prisoner labor, holding an exclusive monopoly contract with the state.
The article in the paper described an investigation of the house led by John Savage's Minnesota Paranormal Investigative Group, using both scientific equipment and ''psychics''. Reported phenomena include both imprint-type and active haunting, including entities wandering the halls and stairs (visual sightings), rapping, lights and electronics turning on and off by themselves, and disembodied voices '' laughing, crying, and howling''! Over the years human remains have been uncovered in the ''empty'' cemetery grounds during construction of a school in the 1870s and as recently as the 1960s, during excavation for a pool.

Nearby residents have also turned up old style tombstones in their garden and even in attics. Speculation on why this site should be the focus of most of this activity have centered on its use as an infirmary in the 1800s, but there may be another reason. Seymour was on the ''concerned citizens'' committee that insisted that the whole cemetery be unceremoniously dug up and moved all the way across town, to the southern city limits (well, at least most of it). Do you suppose this disgraceful desecration increased his honor's property value when a shiny new school replaced the long-neglected grave yard across the street? Ignore the right of the dear-departed to Rest In Peace in their ''long home'', and they might just move into yours!

If you are interested in the more sensational ''impressions'' of the ''clairvoyants'', you can enjoy their ghastly revelations at the paper's archive. A large grain of salt goes well with their ''poltergeist''- style tales.

A Cautionary Note: this is a private home in a quiet residential neighborhood. Please do not loiter, park in the tenant's on-street parking spots, trespass, or ring their doorbells. The local authorities take a dim view of such behavior and take a stern hard line with those who flaunt these reasonable requests. Don't let this happen to you! With a little common sense and consideration, we can all get along! Thanks!
