In 1986 to 1987 I rented one of the apartments in the 300 block of South 3rd West three blocks west of Higgins Avenue. Mine was the ground-floor unit right next door to the big pink ''King Apt'' house. I didn't have a roommate for the first two months, and I often felt creeped out in this apartment by myself.

a Herculean effort to move a muscle or to open my eyes, I looked around my room but saw nothing. It didn't feel like someone was holding me down. I just

felt the need to wake up as soon as possible but couldn't move or wake up. I have never experienced that before or since.
I know that my subconscious is good at detecting a presence while I'm sleeping. That is because a few years later sleeping in a different house I suddenly thrusted my arms out and sent something crashing into the wall. I quickly woke to see the neighbor's cat fleeing. I apparently had sensed the cat jumping up on the bed in front
