My wife and I recently spent two nights alone (or so we thought) out on the Buffalo Gap National Grassland in South Dakota just south of Wall. After setting up camp in a light rain I set out a buffalo skull facing west just outside our tent that I had brought along. I purchased the skull down in Pipestone, Minnesota and felt I should bring it on our camping trip to honor the lost buffalo herds of our nation. After settling in we burned sage, sweet grass

tobacco, and cedar and began enjoying the sound of the crickets, birds, and evening wind against the prairie. The sweet smell of the wildflowers filled

the air, and a damp chill rolled in. A low roar began to sound in the distance and became louder and louder. I was concerned because I had heard the same noise before while witnessing a tornado.
I sat up and peered out into the darkness, and as the sound increased in intensity and clarity it became clear that we were right in the path of a stampede. As the noise increased we heard the distinct sound of hundreds of thousands of pounding hoof beats
