At the turn of the century a minstral show passed through Merrill, WI. The train stopped in Merrill for refreshments and for the engineer to check something he had been warned about on the tracks, going west. The cast and musicians left the Pullman cars after putting ontheir costumes and getting their instruments to pose for a photograph at the request of a local photographer (I believe his name was moise duquette) right near what is now poplar Street, and east Main Street, near the river (probably by the cosmo theatre).

One of the musicians is said to have wandered off (probably from too much drink earlier on board I was told) and never returned. He was dressed in Civil War clothing. I believe my great grandmother said the minstral show was called something on the war (westward? ).

My mother told me that when they would play on the river by two train tracks (going into the sixth ward) they would see a man dressed in Civil War clothing filling his canteen with water from the river. They said when they got his attention, he just disappeared. We still tell this story at the family get togethers in Athens. I wish to remain anonnymous because people might think we are strange. But- that being said- watch out by the river on the bridge, and keep your eyes peeled for the thirsty colored Civil War musician. You might even hear his trumpet in the background. My mother and her friends did.
