In Pauquette Park there is a walking trail. All the way at the end of the trail there is a small wooden bridge that goes to a place called Pine Island. On the island a little ways off the trail there is a statue carved out of a tree.
The statue looks like an Indian woman holding an axe. I always get a creepy feeling when I pass by it. I asked my grandpa about it once and he told me a pretty creepy story about it. Apparently back in the 1940s a local married man was having an affair with a Native American woman from the area.
She ended up getting pregnant. The man at the insistence of his father rejected the woman and his unborn child. In a fit of despair the woman walked out to Pine Island and hanged herself from a tree just off the trail.
The man was overcome with guilt and from the tree she hung herself from he carved a statue of her holding a baby. The mans wife left him and he became an alcoholic and drank himself to death within a few years. The mans father tired of the constant gossip the woman's statue brought about went out to Pine Island and altered the statue removing the baby and making it appear the woman was holding a wood axe.
