as a toddler, and they had to climb the outside of the house to get me out. It was a very creepy house, not very old at the time, but neighbors said the previous owner kept to herself. She had an elderly father that would come to stay with her on occasion but always left the next day. We often wonder if the next owner ever had anything happen!.

I spent four years in North Barrington with my family in the early 70's and always thought it one of the most picturesque and pastoral spots in Illinois. Having never lived in New England, it looked like I thought Vermont, Connecticut and Pennsylvania would look like; rolling green hills, rail fences, horse farms, barns and silos in the countryside and graceful Georgian, Victorian and Queen Anne homes and cottages dotting its gingerbread downtown. In fact, our realtor told us that many execs transplanted from NY chose to live in Barrington simply because it reminded them so much of the world they left behind.
My feeling, even at a young age, was that Barrington also had a lot of bad juju going on. Don't know if it was it's ancient Native American history, rich American history with bevies of hardworking Yankees who settled there after the close of the Blackhawk War and the surfeit of old cemeteries, the place simply had a undercurrent of ''bumps in the night'' underneath the Laura Ashley window dressing. I also understood that by the counterculture 70's, the children of the affluent Barrington Hills families were seriously immersed in the occult and many a Black Masses were held in the dense forests and wooded groves of the outlying areas.
We lived on a farm on Miller Road (since demolished, I hear) that definitely had some serious paranormal activity afoot in both the house and the barn. The house supposedly dated from the mid to late 19th century and, according the lore of old timer residents still around when we moved in, either gangsters or even rogue Civil War deserters (the details were hazy and widely spaced in terms of historical timelines), buried stolen loot somewhere on our property. Several of my brothers used to hear footsteps in the barn when no one else was there and I even saw the face of a bearded man in the second floor window, the only problem being there was no floor or ledge in the area of that particular window and thus nothing for him to stand on at the time.
The main house also had a definite presence, a somewhat sinister presence that did not make itself felt when the house was full of nine people but mores when only one or two persons were at home. I remember distinctly (remember, this happened to me when I was a kid in the early 70's) being home alone at night and feeling that there was a presence in the room, watching me and moving closer with a sense of hatred, malice and, if it could pull it off, an intent to inflict injury. Suffice it to say this was no Casper.
