I am only posting here in hope that I can find someone who might either know the history or had a similar encounter in Maryville, IL. My incident took place around 1988-1989 in the woods located around the Maryville water tower. Back in that time it was mostly woods and farm fields with a few houses speckled around the area. Now in 2013 subdivisions abound all through that area of Maryville, IL.
I was 18 back then and I often ventured into

the woods around the water tower as my escape. It gave me peace and reflection on things; I enjoyed my outings very much. One sunny day during summer

in the late afternoon I began my usual trek to the woods. I always carried firearms when I went into the woods. This particular day I was armed with a police model 12 gauge pump shotgun loaded with 3 inch magnum rounds. I carried it for protection, not hunting and never owned birdshot rounds.
As I entered the woods in my usual entry point I immediately noticed a presence to my left and quickly glanced in that direction. To my surprise a very tall
