Saunemin has the grave of Albert cashier aka jennie hodgers the crossdressing Civil War soldier. Albert was a woman who enlisted as a man in the Illinois army. The grave is on the edge of Saunemin along with the graves of the Lannon family that she lived with after the war.
After sundown on fall nights town residents have seen strange lights near the graves of Albert and the lannons. This seems to be a seasonal thing that happens only in the fall. There have been reports of Civil War era music being heard in the cemetery on some nights for no apparent reason.

Sometimes during thunderstorms townsfolk report seeing lightning strikes at the gravesite.

I have heard screams coming from the woods near where 5 mile creek goes into the Vermillion river. Some friends of mine were hunting there. They said a giant of a man came running after them hollering that they were trespassing.
The scary thing was that you could actually see through him. He ran right through fencerows without going through a gate! The hunters got scared when they saw this and ran to their truck. The giant ghost man stood in the field and appeared to be floating about a foot off the ground! As they drove away he was shaking his fist at them! I was with another group of hunters near the same area and we heard someone yelling at us in a similar manner.
