When I lived in Washington, Zinser Place was known as Washington Street. My family and I lived at 1xx, so I'm not sure if the numbers changed as well. It was a large white house, three doors down, next to the Martini house. I know it's no longer white, and no longer looks like a Federal style with columns out front. I also know that other people who have lived there have experienced some of the same things that we did.
Let's start out with my 'friend' whom I think was a ghost. She told me to call her Nellie or Penelope, and would stay with me when I was reading or playing alone in the house or yard. The weird thing was she could never leave and go anywhere with me. She would just sadly watch me walk away if I went to school or a friend's house. She also told me things about the house, like when a certain tree was planted, or where the pipe access door was when my Dad couldn't find it to fix the plumbing. She seemed like she was just really sad all the time, but was always trying to smile. Well, one day when I was perusing the information at the WHS, I saw a picture of her. This was many years after we'd moved out of the home, but I could never forget her face.

The house had two upstairs areas, accessed by different staircases. One was a servant's bedroom. My older brother moved into the servant's quarters at first, and my sisters and I occupied the other two upstairs bedrooms. Well, after about six months my parents made my brother move into the other upstairs bedroom and crammed all three girls beds in together. The servant's quarters were used for a toy room and storage. When my younger brother and I would play up there we would see shadows and hear whispering, and things would move on their own.

Sometimes the whispering would crescendo and then stop when the closet door would swing open on its own. We NEVER went into the closet. Ever. Eventually, we stopped playing up there, even though we weren't allowed to bring our toys down. We'd play outside in the freezing cold or blistering heat, in fact, or just go to one of our bedrooms and read or play quietly, so our Mom wouldn't try to shoo us back up to that room. And finally there was the basement. Well, it was just evil. Mom sacrificed her nice sun porch for a new laundry room, so she wouldn't have to go back into the basement. She said it was so she didn't have to haul laundry up and down the stairs, but I noticed that she never did laundry unless there was someone to go with her.
We ended up not living there very long, and I remember that it was a very stressful time for my parents. They lost a lot of money on a business deal, and various other things happened. We never seemed to bounce back as a family after living in that house. I'm not sure if that would have happened anyway, or if it happened because, and only because we lived THERE.
