Back in 1999 we moved to a home on Hendrix Street which is near the cemetery. One night I heard scratching on the carpet like a cat would do. I got up, turned the light on, and saw nothing. However, it didn't stop. I could always feel something in the hallway, and everyone else did too. It never really did anything, but you knew it was there, and it seemed to stay mostly in the hallway. One night I was home by myself and was about to leave for work. Then I heard something down the hall, like a bang sound. I didn't investigate because I had to leave for work. Then suddenly it said my name in a loud whisper. I got the hell out of there. We moved a few months later.

A fairly well known haunting is at Hays Music on Vine where the corner intersects with Broadway in downtown Poplar Bluff. After the tornado of 1927 virtually devastated Poplar Bluff, the Butler County courthouse was destroyed. Since Butler County needed to hold court anyway, the building now known as Hays was chosen because it had little or no damage. In 1972 I worked part of the summer in that building when it was Overby's Furniture as general labor, moving and transporting furniture and custodial duties, etc.
My supervisor with whom I shared these duties told me the top floor of the building was haunted. He further stated he could sometimes hear footsteps on that floor. He had me accompany him on the freight elevator, and we proceeded to the top floor where I saw the old judge's bench. He told me the jail cells had been in the northeast corner, and a young woman had hanged herself there one night.
