I grew up on the north side of Springfield on the 1300 block of N. Clay. We lived in a small duplex when I was in grade school. My sister and I shared a room. My Mom was a single parent and worked all the time, but she was always with us at night. After we moved in we continually heard what sounded like chains and knocks on the walls. It was consistent every night. Sometimes the bumps were rhythmic. The knocks would even echo your knocks if you knocked

on the wall.
My mom began going to neighbors and asking the history of the home. She discovered that a man had died on Christmas night in a house
|
fire. From then on my Mom was honest with us about it. She wouldn't let us fear it. The knocking and chains continued for the entire time we lived there. We also had to explain to our neighbors if a new resident moved in. We debunked it possibly being pipes or something to do with the house. It was as my Mom put it, ''Part of the history of the house. ''
