Many odd stories have been told about the old Lallie Kemp hospital on Highway 51 between Tickfaw and Independence. It used to be a full service hospital in the state-run Charity Hospital system, but was turned into an outpatient clinic a number of years ago, and most of the old wards were closed. Human figures and moving lights have been seen through the windows inside the closed wards at night in recent years.
My personal experience was from

1986, when I was a physician in residency training at the facility. One night about 10:00 pm I was walking from the apartment where the residents stayed,

which was in a separate building, to the main hospital. A woman was standing near the path crying as I walked by. I asked if she needed help, and she asked if I could check on her baby. I asked her name, and she didn't reply. I went into the building and told the night nurse to get security to help her, thinking she was very upset and possibly psychotic.
