I was there today and purposely did not read the guide so I could just experience things. One random spot before the tree with the prayer ribbons I was overcome with sadness and my heart was pounding.
Another moment farther down the trail I distinctly heard shouts and screams. Later in I know I heard the trampling of horses hooves before we rounded the bend to the spot where the horses were executed.

I was at the Washita battle site at Cheyenne OK and saw horse legs, blue clad legs and could hear leather creaking, metal jingling and horses feet stamping the ground. I felt like I was a little kid hiding in some bushes and knew they were going to attack the village.

At that point I was overcome with emotion and started crying because I knew they were going to attack my village. Terrifying.

I was born in Cheyenne, and grew up there, before the battle of the Washita site became state or federal property there was just a Monument, many towns kid used this as a party place to drink and socialize, one very cold Nov night a friend met me there to drink and talk.
