The elderly indian's story was soon shrugged off by everyone. As many years went by the story was told over and over as a joke, and especially at Halloween. Some teenage kids had reported seeing small leprechaun like people running across country roads several times, and an elderly lady told of little people playing among her flowers.
Those stories were also laughed off by local people. Then about thirty years later a local farmer found some small caves

on his land. The caves were small enough that he had to crawl in order to see inside them.
He could tell that tiny camp fires had been in the caves

at some time. And then he found five mummified little people about a foot tall in one of the caves. Word spread fast around the Duke community, and it was decided to just leave the small mummies where they were out of respect for the Oklahoma little people, and the Indian tribes who still live in Oklahoma.
I like to think there may still be little people out and about in Duke, Oklahoma doing whatever they enjoy most.
