My family and I lived in a wood frame two-story house a mile and a half south of Empire School. It was known as Polk Hill by our landlord. The upstairs was one large room with three gables on the north, south, and east sides. There were four large square columns in the center of the room. They formed a square and were wide enough for a bed to set inside them. There was a secret room behind the west wall with a mattress, some shelves, and old outdated

men's clothing.
The house had caught on fire at some time, and the charred boards were painted over. At the top of the stairs there was a faint

stain on two of the steps and a hole high above the door. I didn't pay much attention to this until one evening when my brothers and I were sliding down the banister. It was storming with thunder and lightning. When I reached the top of the stairs and started to slide down I noticed that the stain had gotten larger and darker. It looked like a puddle of liquid. I touched it. It was dry but very cold.
I told my grandparents about it and asked
