The Abilene State School is very haunted. I was working at one of the cottages there and was sitting beside the bed of a resident. Between his bedroom and another bedroom where a former resident died was a bathroom, so both bedrooms were close together. I was told that the area was haunted.
That day the door was closed to the bed of the resident I was sitting with. The hallway and house was closed at the time to any wind, and there was no one in the hallway at all. Suddenly the door swung back violently and hit the wall with a bang! I checked the hall very quickly and no one was there. This happened during other times and each time violently. Once I was in the kitchen and watched a smoky white object float out of the hallway and float along the ceiling and disappear. I knew it was a spirit because I had seen one in a house I had lived in. I was standing by co-workers, but when I asked them if they were seeing it too no one else could see it.

The buildings are over a century old there and I talked later to two men from another department, and they said they could hear the voices of long dead children where the old playground used to be. They said it sounded like children laughing and playing, but there have been no children residents since the early 1900s.

The old YWCA building on North 10th is (or was) a place where you could hear things and see things from the corner of your eye. Several times I heard women laughing at the end of the hall on nights when I worked late and knew no one else was in the building. A black shadow often crossed my peripheral vision during the day heading to an unoccupied room on the second floor. Pictures would fall off the wall, and when replaced would fall off again. We were told that one day the building had been saturated with prayer. There were stories from others about figures standing in the inner courtyard whom you could see in the mirror, yet were not there upon turning around. Items moved (or were moved) from place to place. Nothing sinister just different. .
