Perico, Texas at one time was a small farming community with a country school, a gymnasium, a post office, and a country store. The school closed around 1956 and was later demolished. Perico is now a ghost town on Highway 87, between Dalhart and Texline, Texas. There are still remains of some of the buildings and the gymnasium is still standing. Late one night, as a friend of mine and I drove past Perico, I pulled off the highway and stopped the car on the dirt road in front of the gymnasium. As we stood outside the car, I remembered back more than fifty years ago, all the good times I had when going to school at Perico and how much fun all the students had roller skating in the gym. We stood in silence for the next fifteen minutes.
Finally, I said ''well it's late, we better get home. '' I opened the car door and then turned back for one last look. That was when a strange thing happened. In the distance I heard children's voices coming from that old deserted gymnasium. These were happy laughing voices. I did not say a word as we drove away from Perico and headed back to Amarillo. My friend, Linda finally said ''Harry, who were those kids, and how did they know your name?'' I did not want to admit to hearing a thing, so I said ''what kids? '' Linda said ''the kids that kept asking you to stay with them. '' I had promised myself that I would not mention this story to anyone, but I am sixty-seven, and life is getting away from me, so I decided to share my story with you. Some lonely night, if you are ever driving past Perico, stop on the dirt road in front of the gym and listen for children's voices. They might invite you to stay.
