In 1976 my VW Beetle was tailgated out of nowhere by a weaving metallic brown muscle car which then disappeared in the second or two when I checked the road ahead and looked in the rearview again. There were no other cars around, and it was an overcast afternoon. There were no side roads just ranchland and no tree cover. It was Hwy 77 south somewhere between Edna and Inez, I believe.

I was driving to Kingsville in 1978 down Hwy 77 S in my VW Beetle on a cloudy day when a brown car that looked like an early 70s Pontiac suddenly appeared out of nowhere in my rear view and tailgated me weaving side to side. I looked ahead to check the road quickly, and when I looked the next moment in my rear view the car was gone. There were no roads it could have turned off on, and I only looked away for a split second. I was not familiar with the towns nearby at the time, but there are three that have female names including Louise, Edna, and Victoria. I think it was the Edna area.
