I used to live in a very old apartment building on Rio Grande between Brown and Noble. The building is shaped like a hollow square and there is a courtyard in the middle. I lived in that building twice in different apartments. I was a graduate student and a single mother at that time, so I never paid much attention to who was living in the building with me. People would move in and out so often. I never bothered to try to make friends. Both times I experienced hearing arguments in the courtyard, only to look out the window and find nobody there. Other tenants said they too had heard phantom arguments at times. After a while I just convinced myself that I was hearing someone's TV.
The one experience I will never forget happened in early December, 2004. I was leaving my apartment right as it was getting dark. As I made my way down the stairs with my six-year-old son, I heard a young woman in the apartment below mine pleading with someone to ''stop. '' I do not know exactly what she wanted to stop, but I know it was not good. I put my ear up to the door and heard the woman's muffled voice again, begging, ''please, just stop! '' I decided to call the police at that point because I was afraid things were going to get violent. I told the dispatcher what I had heard, and explained that I could not wait for a unit to arrive because I was late getting somewhere. As I walked down into the courtyard, I looked up at the window of the apartment where I had heard the woman pleading with someone, or something. The window was open. It was dark inside and I saw no movement. I could still hear bits and pieces of what I thought was a lover's quarrel, but I was beginning to lose interest by that time, so I did not struggle to hear dialogue.

I came home later that night and went straight to bed assuming the police had settled the incident. The next morning I decided to go out for a paper, and I passed my neighbor in the courtyard. He stopped me and asked me if I had been the one to call the police the previous evening. I said that I had and explained why. The whole time he was listening he had a look on his face that made me feel like he had heard this story before. He stopped me before I could finish and told me that the apartment I was talking about had been vacant for months and was locked up tight. I walked with him up to the apartment to see for myself, and in fact the apartment was locked and seemingly vacant. ''This is not new,'' he laughed. ''The lady that 'lives' in there has been trying to get our attention for years. You are just the first person who has ever called the cops''.

I had to move out a few months after that took place. While living there, I was never scared to my core, but the energy there was definitely spooky to say the least. Someday I would love to move back to the building. It was a great place, ghosts and all. . Submitted by Natalie
