When I was a teenager my sisters and I used to walk to the Harlingen Cemetery to read the tombstones at night. One night we decided to walk all the way to the back of the cemetery. As we reached the last row near the fence, we noticed an old woman that appeared to be in a white nightgown standing on the outer side of the fence with her fingers clutching the fence and her face pressed against it staring at us with a sinister smile.

Naturally we got spooked. We turned around and started walking quickly to the front. We then turned back to see if she was still there. Suddenly she was inside the cemetery and appeared to be floating barefoot towards us. At that point we were terrified, so we started running. When we reached the front entrance we turned back again, and she was gone. We never returned to the cemetery, and it's been 31 years since, but I still remember that chilling incident as if it happened yesterday.

When I was about six to eight years old I spent the night at my grandma's house often. She lived out in the barrio really close to the farm land (labor). It was a poor home made of wood. She did not have an extra bed, and I did not want to sleep with her because it was too hot. Of course there was no AC. So I took the cushions off the couch and put them together. I put a bed sheet on top, turned on a fan, and grabbed a pillow, and that was my bed for the night. My grandma went to her bed, and I obviously stayed in the other room right next to an open window, so the fresh air could come in. Some time during the night I awakened to what were the voices of my cousins (all about the same age as me at the time). I looked out the window and saw a total of six children standing in the moonlight. They looked like my cousins. My cousin Lisa whom I hung around with a lot was calling me outside to play. My cousin Jr. or else I thought was bouncing a ball calling me out too. The ones in the back were playing touch or something. My cousin Lisa kept saying ''come on, Cindy, let's go play. ''

I really thought that they were them, and nothing seemed strange to me because of course they looked like them, and because they all did live really close. I told Lisa that I could not because if grandma found out I went outside, she would get mad at me. Lisa said she would not tell and that it was OK because she was also asleep. I even asked her why they were out so late at night playing. Her reply it was because it was too hot during the day. I still was hesitant, and I almost did go outside if my grandma had not woken up. She called out from her room and said ''who are you talking to?'' I looked back to say ''con Lisa.'' (with Lisa) It did not even take me two seconds to respond to my grandmother. When I looked back to tell Lisa and my other cousins that they had better go before she caught them they were already gone. I mean ''how could they just be gone in that split second?'' I pressed my head on the window screen to get a better view to the back yard which was the only way to get to their houses without having to go through the street. There was nothing. Not one sound of a child playing anyhow.

Of course I got up and ran to my grandma's room. I told her what was going on, and she did believe me. I mean she heard me talking to someone for crying out loud. I was not dreaming. She prayed for several days and did the only old school Mexican thing grandmas would do in that day. Yep, una barrida or curarme de susto. I do not know if it really worked, but till the day it still sends chills down my spine, and I know it really happened. You decide for yourself.
