I'm a graduate of 1968. My time in elementary school at the old school was fun. We often went to the lake east of the school which is about a mile and half. The gymnasium was located on the east side of the campus, and beyond the gym about a quarter of a mile lived an old gentleman named Coffee Chili. He did worked for the Garrison as a mule skinner, a Navajo. We would walk down to the old Paul Merrill general store and often see Mr. Chili coming

or going. He lived next to the cemetery, and us boys were intimidated by his presence. I can't imagine residing next to a cemetery. Navajo people revered

and feared contact with the deceased; let alone residing or being near a grave or cemetery. We always kept our distance from Mr. Coffee Chili but deeply respected him. He must have been the damndest old brave soul to walked the grounds of Fort Wingate. Submitted by anonymous

On September 21st around 1:45 I went to Wingate with a couple of friends. We parked our car right beside the gas station across trailer parks. The three of us were walking towards the hospital, and we heard a cup pass in the road. We didn't care to pay attention' until we turned around. Then we heard horse footsteps and noises coming closer. Then we saw a big shadow coming fast for us. We couldn't see anything. It was just big and black shadow, so we began to get scared and ran off back to our ride. I don't know what it was. In my head I was thinking a demon with goofy or the headless horseman.
