Ever since we moved to Saratoga Springs my six-year-old daughter has been seeing an invisible person she calls ''Pencil Man.'' I asked her why she called him that, and she said because all she could see were the edges of him not the rest of him. It was as if someone drew him on a piece of paper. She saw him on our porch at the church across the street walking the bike paths around the neighborhood. One day she told me that Pencil Man was in her dream

and that he showed her where he lived. She said he lived in the middle of nowhere in what she thought was a ''cave.''
She drew a picture of it,

and it looked like a big hole in the side of a mountain. She drew pencil man and other men and told me they were coming up out of the ''cave.'' I couldn't help but think about how we live next to an old abandoned railroad grade. Back in the 1800s men rode a steam train from Lehi out to the mines around Eureka. The mines are long gone now. The train is gone, and the towns have been deserted for nearly 70 years. My daughter knows nothing of this. It creeps me
