The Legend of Lantern Man
Back in the 1920s or 30s, a man and his wife were driving to Alpaugh on a foggy night. Back then none of the country roads were paved, and they couldn't see the dirt road in the fog. The car wound up in a ditch. The man told his wife to stay with the car while he walked into town to find somebody who could help him get the car out of the ditch.
He lit his lantern and headed off into the fog. This was the last time his wife ever saw him. The next morning the fog cleared, and some other people found the car and the wife. She explained to them that her husband went to get help, but he hasn't come back yet. They all went into town and looked everywhere for him. Nobody saw him.
Every once in a while on a foggy night you can see a glowing light off in the distance. It looks like it could be a light being carried by a person walking. Some people will tell you that that light is the glow from that man's lantern. He is still out there trying to find his way into Alpaugh. .
