Many ghosts share space with the living in Avenal. Ghosts represent a huge span of geologic time tens of thousands of years. I have witnessed a whole line of wildcatters walking up the road from the oil derek. They all carried pick axes and some had pails (for their food. ) They looked weary. Clothing dirty and tattered. We would hear them on occasion as we looked for fossils. We heard them pounding on the iron pipe for the oil to come. Native Indians

witch. Maybe that helped keep me alive. Maybe that was a good at the time. It was my wish to leave there alive, and so obvious many do not. . Submitted by Carmille

We would bring fossils home from weekend trips. The garage was set up for uncovering shells and breaking rock. We were in the living room one night listening to Art Bell on Coast to Coast and watching a UFO out our window (right out our window! ) when I saw an older man walk from our downstairs bathroom through to the garage and then I heard him begin work with our rock tools on the fossils we had out on the bench! I'm thinking we brought a wildcatter home from the hills above Avenal.
