On the corner of Badillo and Puente there are these apartments: Two face Puente, and the other two face Badillo. In 1997 we moved next to my aunt which lived in the apartments facing Puente Avenue. My mom immediately began seeing tiny little shadows that looked like lawn gnome running around the house even in between the walls. She told my grandmother what she had seen. My grandmother told her not to worry and hat they were just duendes.
One night my brother woke up to use the bathroom which was about three feet away from the bedroom door. My step dad told him to hurry back and not to go to the living room where I slept. After not returning my stepdad got up to get my brother. He went to where I slept and couldn't find him. They checked the entire one bedroom apartment inside and out. They even ran outside to look for him. My stepdad immediately realized that he had to turn the deadbolt lock to get outside. My brother could not have gotten out without unlocking the door. The only other door was also a deadbolt but it required a key to open from either side. They were about to call the police when they looked down, and my brother had magically appeared at my feet. My parents had checked everywhere a dozen times. I even woke up with all the commotion.

Years later I researched the topic of fairies and duendes. I read that they are elemental creatures that for the most part are just mischievous but harmless unless you make them angry. I also read that they like children. If they felt harmed, threatened, or betrayed they would turn on the host family. They would often take the youngest child and replace it with a substitute dummy made of mud and straw. Their sole purpose was to eat and consume.

Fifty years ago my mom and my seven siblings moved to Baldwin Park from Los Angeles. My father suddenly died of a heart attack, so we had to move since my dad was the breadwinner. We found a place on North Barnes Avenue. It was a small house but also had a separate room next to the house. Well one night my oldest sister went to the separate room to get something. She came back into the house white as a ghost. She couldn't speak but eventually was able to tell my mom that she walked in the room, and an old lady was there and just said boo. Our dog was in the room too, but my sister said he looked like he was dead. My mom called my uncle to investigate but found nothing. Dog was OK too. Submitted by Carlos
