I work in Campo, San Diego County, California. It is located about fifty miles east of San Diego along Highway 94. It is the site of the Old Camp Lockett (Buffalo Soldiers) and Camp Mitchell (rehabilitation hospital). Most of what was Camp Mitchell is now a juvenile ranch facility. It has its share of ghostly hauntings. In one of the old barracks that are now used as apartments; one can often smell pipe tobacco and the presence of a large but gentle man. At

10:00 pm he turns out the lights. Sometimes you can hear him walk the floors at night and smell his pipe. He is fond of young children. On several occasions

this ghost has prevented potential injury of children. Unescorted toddlers have been blocked from going down the outside steep stairs and even open windows.
In the late 1800s there was a shootout near the previous Haskell Brothers' Store. Several people and bandits were killed when local ranchers happened to show up at the right time. Three remaining bandits were captured, tied to an old oak tree and a rider was sent off to San Diego for the sheriff. That
