About ten years ago my friend, I, and his younger brother were hanging out at the water hole at night. We were at the large pond area at the base of the hill that has the plaque at the top. We had Tiki torches set up all around the water. We were swimming and having a good time when what sounded and felt like ten to fifteen pound rocks started being thrown into the water by something. We thought that maybe it was just an animal accidentally rolling them in. That was until one landed right next to my foot fifteen feet away from the edge of the water. I felt the rock land. It splashed all over me, and I could feel it with my foot after it landed.

We immediately got out of the water, and one by one our torches started to blow out. We were getting pretty scared by this point. All huddled around the last remaining lit torch when it was blown out the way a person would blow it out. There was a slight breeze, and these torches were blown out the opposite direction. There was the sound of somebody blowing it out. As soon as that final torch went out, we ran off back to the car. We left all our stuff over there and bailed.

There are rumors of families perishing in the floods, rumors of smugglers, and rumors of murders in the area. My friend that I was there with worked at the Wailey House in old town SD at the time. They had paranormal investigators in there all the time. He had told them the story but only got as far as mentioning Fallbrook when the investigators interrupted. They said ''wait, was this at a water hole type area in the Santa Margarita River just north of Fallbrook, off Sandia Creek Road?'' My friend said ''yes. That's exactly where it happened. '' The investigators then said ''yeah. Don't go there at night. ''

Until this day every time I tell the story it sends shivers up my spine. Granted we never actually saw a ghost, we to this day believe there was some serious paranormal activity going on.

Does anybody have any insight to this? Or similar occurrences in the area? Scary stuff.

Comment by Art: I believe you. I was 18 years old at the time back in 2008. Me and 2 friends had nothing better to do. We decided to go the waterhole late at night around 11. I believe we were chilling by the bench when he heard loud splashes coming from the waterhole like someone was running towards us. We immediately took off running. It was like something chased us out of there. Whatever it was gave us the impression that it was not friendly at all. We could feel it chasing us. That was the last time we ever went there again. I have never run so fast in my life. Best advice: avoid that place at night. People have had different experiences. It is not a safe place to be at dark.
