The following incident happened in Martinez Canyon in the west side of the Coachella Valley. There's an old rock house in Martinez Canyon and I'd been going up there on and off since the age of 13. In February of 1979 I'd been out of active duty in the Army for 4 months and my first child had just been born. I decided to hike to the cabin and see how it had held up. The trip up was uneventful and in fact quite interesting as spring can be. Water was

running at the time and I was able to follow the seasonal stream right to the cabin.
On the way back towards the mouth of the canyon three washes

come together and form a sort of inverted peace sign. In all an area roughly 300'-400' across forms the floor of the canyon at this point. Well sitting in the middle of the area is the most beautiful German Shepherd I'd ever seen and have never seen its likes again. I approached the dog and called out looking for the owner, hearing no response I started to talk to the dog. He seemed friendly enough and actually ate the half sandwich I offered him. Well
