I have many times, in my life time, been through some very frightening experiences and always considered ghosts as evil or threatening. Something has happened to change my opinion on ghosts. I am a downtown business owner, and we have two post offices here in Merced, a new office on ''M'' Street and the old Bell Station Post Office located on the corner of 18th and K. When I first opened my business it felt a little eerie because there were no other occupants in the building. Once the post office would lock their doors, it would be very quiet. I would stay late almost every night to catch up on my day's work. Every day between 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm you can hear a woman's laugher and shuffling papers. It was like the sound you hear when someone is placing your mail in the mail boxes. Then there is the sound of walking heels down the hallway. I would wait, looking towards my doorway expecting to see someone reach my door, but then the sound will just stop.

One night I had a client with a late appointment. As she walked into my office, she kept looking behind me with a confused look on her face but did not say anything. When she left she called me on the phone and asked me who else was with me in the office. When I said no one she told me that for an instant she saw an image of a woman standing behind me then disappear. She thought maybe she had imagined it. This scared me because of what I had been experiencing myself since being here. She told me not to feel scared because she had felt like this person was somehow there to protect me, but that did not make me feel any less scared.

As the years have passed, I now believe that she is not here to harm me but to look after me. Maybe something happened to her while working late, and she feels like she needs to be here with me so as nothing bad happens to me. I really don't know why she haunts this place, but I have had numerous clients tell me they feel like their little hairs from their necks stand when they walk into my office. Sometimes she does things to me that irritate me, and I will ask her ''what did I do to make you do that?'' One day I went to the ladies room, and I always place the key on a little stand on the wall with a mirror, and when I was behind the stall I heard the keys drop to the floor. When I came out I looked on the floor, and the keys were nowhere in sight. I got down on my knees and looked under the wall sink, thinking maybe they were there, but I could not find the keys. So frustrated, I started to walk towards the door when just out of nowhere I heard the keys fall to the tile floor. I looked back and sure enough they were right in the middle of the bathroom floor. Ugh, that just annoyed me. I felt like she was playing games with me.
On another instance I had four plaques on the wall with biblical sayings, and one day when I came to work one of them was across the room on the floor shattered like someone had just thrown it against the wall. There was no way it had just fallen and broken because it would not be completely across the room. Another instance, one of my clients gave me a beautiful angel, and she calls me her guardian angel. I had it on my bookshelf, and sure enough that one was also thrown way across the room and shattered. I guess she doesn't like anything related to god.
If anyone knows any history about this place or has had similar things happen to them when they were leasing an office here, please let me know. The janitor has had some disturbing things happen to him to the point that he no longer comes to work after dark. However, he feels that the spirit is evil. He has told me that he has felt the presence hold on to him refusing him access to a certain part of the building, and it makes him freeze in place, so he will just walk out.
