I grew up and lived in Montclair from 1968 to 2005. The house we lived in was on Monte Vista Avenue. It was purchased in 1964 by my grandfather as a place for my aunt and her six kids. Then in 1968 my parents bought the house. Previously the house was owned by a woman who lived there with her mentally disabled adult son. The story we heard was that the son died in the house, and the mother passed away a short time later. Events began to take place in the house shortly after my aunt moved in. She claimed that the cover to the opening of the attic would be lifting up and slamming down. She was also locked out of the bedrooms and then a minute later the door just opened. My cousins nicknamed this entity ''Sydney. '' Anytime something strange would happen, they would just say ''Sydney did it!'' There was a canister vacuum in the hall closet that would periodically roll out on its own when there was no possible way it could (it had to be put in sideways to fit. )
One of the more sinister stories involved the porcelain doll figurines my sister collected. The dolls were displayed on her dresser. One day she walked out of the room for probably no more than a couple of minutes, only to return and find them smashed but still sitting in their original positions. (No, this was not a mean sibling prank, as I was still a toddler with no means of even getting to them. ) One event that not everyone could agree upon happened after my dad had the swimming pool put in. My older sister said that someone could be heard swimming in the pool one day. However, upon investigation all you could see was water being displaced like someone was swimming, but no one was there. She even claimed to find wet footprints along the edge of the pool. Another time a five-pound bag of sugar came out of the cupboard above the refrigerator; it flew across the kitchen and hit my sister in the shoulder. There was no possible way that bag could have fallen out as she was nowhere near the refrigerator when it happened.
One time my mom and I came home from the store and found everything in the top of my closet on the floor. It looked like everything had been pushed out, and nothing else in the room was disturbed. My mom thought it was one of my friends that did it, but I figure it was ''Sydney'' playing a prank again. I never really felt comfortable in that house. My grandparents and my mom passed away there. Sadly the house holds some not so fond memories, but the stories about that place are legendary in my family.

I used to live in Montclair about 16 years ago, and one night I fell asleep on the couch. My son who was about 3 came down the hallway crying for me. I called his name, and I could see a shadow behind him in a black cape and hat flowing. I was so scared; I jumped up and turned on the lamp, and it disappeared. I told my husband the next day, and he just brushed it off and told me I dreamed it. I knew it was real. Other things kept happening. Another time my teenage daughter saw a shadow of a man climb through the window. She ran out of the room screaming. I learned from an elderly neighbor that it was all orange groves before the houses were built. I figured someone was probably murdered there.
