Between 1993 and 1998, my family (mom, brother, ex-step-dad) and I lived in one of the older houses of Montclair on Vernon ave. The property is condemned at the moment (pictures after the jump). On our first night in the house, we began the process of clearing out the remaining boxes in the large living room.
It was past 10 pm when my mother suddenly looked up and asked, in a startled, quiet voice, if we had heard something; she said she had heard as if someone ran from one side of the house to the other (south to north) above the ceiling(the house had a cellar-like crawlspace that spanned the length of the house).

No one but she heard the first set of sounds, but as we quieted down to listen more closely, sure enough, everyone heard as if someone (too light to be an adult person, yet too heavy to be a cat, possum, or raccoon) ran across the span above the ceiling (north to south).

We were terrified at the moment, thinking that someone was in the house. My mom's ex-husband (... ) coaxed my younger brother, who was about 8 or 9 at the time, to take a peek into the cellar from the entrance on the celing, inside the closet of the corridor which lead to all the rooms.
Athough scared, my brother obliged (after all, our ex-step-dad treated him better than he treated me) , peeked into the opening with a small flashlight, and quickly looked around. Although I doubt if he actually opened his eyes, he reported nothing unusual save a few plastic bags, and a desk or table; it was simply darkness and empty space all around. .
