I live in the weird part of town where it's sort of Port Hueneme, but it's still Oxnard. Some kind of in between place. That's how it feels to me, anyway. I live on Cypress Road near the train tracks. I live in apartment buildings where some of the residents have complained of seeing things. I've heard the area was a place where people used to practice witchcraft, but like all things people ''hear'' I can't honestly be sure. I just want to know what those things in my house are. Saying ''things'' feels disrespectful, but I want to know.

I've seen this black shadow. Rarely but I've seen it walk once into my brothers room at night. Jumping up from my room, only to find my brother sound asleep in his bed and the only person in the room. My mother had been at the table facing our rooms and the hallway connecting us. She hadn't seen a thing. When I first saw ''things'' here I was on the couch in a dimly lit living room facing the 3-door hallway. My brother's room door was open, so the sunlight brightened up the bathroom door.

I had had a friend over, so I assumed the pale arm and hand pulling the bathroom door closed was them playing a joke on me. It was them waiting to jump out at me. They had closed it enough where it seemed they could peek out, and I swear it felt like that, that I was being watched, but I wasn't afraid. I laughed and said ''you're creepy!'' I jumped up and neared the bathroom door and threw it open. There was nothing and nobody, only darkness. I felt a drop in my stomach. I backed out and closed the door.

My friend had been in my room the whole time. The other thing I saw once was a little boy about 2 or 3 peering outside my patio door. He had been lit up halfway head to toe in the yellowish gold afternoon sunlight, and I could see his overalls and maybe a white shirt, and then he was gone.

The other stories are too ridiculous to tell. It is ridiculous enough for people to think I'm just crazy, but I will tell one more. I think this black shadow that's here might follow me sometimes. I was leaving my dad's house (he lives somewhere on N 8th Street. ). He stood on his front step, and I faced him. We were talking and saying our goodbyes when out of the corner of my eye I saw a tall black shadow peek out from around a corner as if looking in on us. Then it drew back around out of sight. My dad looked that direction when it finally registered and asked ''did you see that?'' I said ''I did. '' We still talk about it sometimes.

One more thing? Anyone notice how thick it feels at Hueneme pier? If you go out there at night, you feel a thick cold. It is not thick as in suffocating, or cold as in weather exactly though it is freezing late at night. However, it is thick as in busy: a fullness. A tiny silent humming you can feel deep inside your chest when you reach the end and cold as in isolation. Sometimes I feel my great grandfather there. Not because I think he's trapped or a wandering spirit, but I think that place is like a portal or beacon or something for the spirits.
