In September of 1999, I was a student at California Baptist University. One night around 10:00 pm, I felt like going for a walk around the block. I walked out toward the cross streets of Magnolia Ave and Adams. At that corner, across from Magnolia Ave. There was a Baptist church. I looked toward the shopping center and saw a young man, about eighteen or nineteen sitting on the curb in front of some apartments. I had a craving to smoke and decided he looked harmless enough to ask for a cigarette.
As I got closer, I noticed his clothing was very out of date. He dressed as teenagers did in the early 90s, not 1999. His haircut and even his shoes were from the early 90s as well. I sat a few feet from him and asked for a cigarette. He said with a shy smile, ''I do not smoke, sorry. '' I told him it was just as well, and we made small talk for a few minutes. As we talked I noticed a pattern. Everything I asked him, he had the answer to before I was finished talking as if he can know my thoughts. For example, I started talking about his style and how it reminded me of the way older kids dressed in 1989 or 1990. I told him he looked like a kid who was part of the Mickey Mouse Club band called ''The Party. '' He showed me a cassette tape he was listening to on a walkman. It was ''The Party. '' I started to get freaked out. He was being polite about it, but I started to think ''Is he real? Is he supernatural? '' He almost did not seem like he was there, and I went to try to nonchalantly touch him. I did not feel anything. I could see that my hand was up against his arm, but I could not feel him. I felt cold and the hairs on my body stood straight on end as they do now when I recall this incident. He asked me what I was doing. I asked if he was an angel or a ghost. He said ''what do you think? '' I was so scared that I just got up and started walking backwards. I ran back toward the front of the school building by Fortuna Fountain. I got brave and had a feeling that I had to find out if he was a real person or not. I turned around and walked back to the sidewalk along Magnolia Ave. I looked toward the church and saw him in the shadows of a tree. I jaywalked across the street and went up to him. I told him that I had to find out if he was real. He said again ''what do you think? '' I asked him where he lived and to give me his phone number. He gave me a number, and I asked to see him the next night and go to church with me at VCC. He said I needed to call him to see what he would be doing. I asked him his name and he said, ''Jamie'' and laughed.
I told my friends in the college dorm about who I met, and they all thought I was just pulling their leg. I waited until the next day, which was a Sunday to call the number he gave me. After a few rings an older man answered the call. I asked to speak with Jamie, and the man hung up abruptly. I waited a minute and called again. I asked for Jamie again and he yelled at me ''who do you think you are, playing jokes on us? '' I asked what he meant. He asked where I got the number and I told him ''from Jamie. '' He cursed me as a liar. I told him the story. He got very quiet and said, ''Jamie died ten years ago. He was hit by a car. '' I asked him ''where did the accident happen?'' He said ''at the corner of Magnolia and Adams. I told him that was where I met Jamie the night before. He started weeping, and I told him I was glad to have met his son, and he looked ''happy. '' That was not the first time I saw a ''ghost'' near California Baptist University, but that was the most significant. .

Comment by Darla: Hey, there Mark. I just read your story about ''Jaime'' your ghost encounter. I just wanted to comment on it. I tried to look up Jaime's story but couldn't find anything. Thanks for posting this. It was interesting to read.
